WEAVE Women a Thai based NGO sells hand made items, designed and woven by Karen refugees. In order to provide women living at the refugee camps with a livelihood WEAVE Women supplies them with thread, then sells the weavings in our Chiang Mai shop and over the internet. There are very limited opportunities to earn money at the camp, the money they make helps improve their standard of living. WEAVE don't make a profit on this project (they are a member of the fair-trade federation) the cost covers the women's wage and expenses such as buying and transporting the thread.
The most popular items are dolls (wearing traditional Karen costume) these sell well, as for every two dolls we sell we donate one to a child at a refugee camp. They also sell, greetings cards, scarves, bags and homeware. Everything is 100% hand-woven, a lot of our products incorporate traditional Karen design.
